When it comes to decision-making of any kind, we know to turn to our friends for advice and unwavering support. Just ask designer Monique Lhuillier, who spent many get-togethers asking her nearest and dearest to spritz and sniff a number of different floral scents until she finally landed on something extra-special. On February 22, the designer made her beauty debut with the result: her first eponymous fragrance, Monique Lhuillier Eau de Parfum.
“Fragrance is something I’ve always liked to put on last, after I’m dressed,” Lhuillier tells Allure. “It works hand-in-hand with fashion, giving you confidence when you feel good. The sensory note was the only thing I was missing from my brand.”
Fans of Lhuillier know that flowers play a huge role in her ethereal, dream-like clothing. The go-to designer for the likes of Michelle Obama, Jennifer Lopez, and Reese Witherspoon, she grew up wearing Chanel scents and knew she wanted to create something that captured the same kinds of notes but with a softer tone to it.
The fragrance itself is quite lovely; with notes of bergamot, freesia, rose, and lily of the valley (her favorite flowers), you get a sweet, floral, and green base that is warmed up with rich violet, musk, and patchouli. Hitting that delicate balance of sweet without smelling like you’re trapped in a room full of flowers, this will please even the most floral-averse.
Lhuillier says she has been plotting her fragrance debut for over a decade. “I wanted this category for at least 14 years,” she says. Once she found the right perfumer in Maurice Roucel to help her craft her dream scent, it took an entire year of mixing notes and making sure the right ingredients were used. It was the designer in her who created a bottle with a floral cap with movement to it, just like the dresses she’s known for.
This is just the beginning of her expansion into the beauty space. Eventually, Lhuillier would love to launch a lip product or some sort of color palette. Taking a cue from her “glamorous mother,” she says beauty is something that starts with how you feel. “I never saw my mother without lipstick on or without her nails polished,” she tells Allure. “Beauty is different for everybody, but for me it meant taking care of yourself and putting on that one item that makes you feel ready for the day.”
So, while we wait for her next beauty move, we’re more than happy to enjoy this exciting launch for now. You can find the Monique Lhuillier Eau de Parfum for $175 for 3.4 ounces at nordstrom.com.
